Wakory wakes you in the minutes before your wake time — when it detects light sleep, otherwise with a gentle nudge on your watch, and with the guaranteed alarm at your wake time at the latest. The answers below explain what actually happens during that night, and why some things work the way they do.
Setting up and turning on
Why do I have to open the Wakory app on my watch in the evening?
Light sleep detection runs inside a watchOS smart alarm session, and such a session can only be scheduled while Wakory is in the foreground on the watch. That is a watchOS rule, not a setting we can work around. Once scheduled, the session runs on its own, and you can close the app. Keep the watch on your wrist overnight, though — that is the only way it can detect your light sleep.
The easiest way is the complication on your watch face: one tap opens Wakory on the watch and asks whether you want to be woken the next morning. Confirm there, and light sleep detection is scheduled automatically. Wakory's evening reminder works the same way.
The widget on your iPhone, by contrast, opens the iPhone app. Unless you also open Wakory on your watch, only the guaranteed alarm at your latest wake time will wake you — without light sleep detection.
How long can the wake window be?
30 minutes at most. watchOS gives the smart alarm session only a limited time budget; the Apple Watch could not monitor a longer window from start to finish. Your set wake time is the end of the window: Wakory may wake you earlier, never later.
Do I have to turn on the alarm every evening?
Not if you use the weekly plan: Wakory then wakes you automatically on the days you picked, and instead of “Turn off alarm” you get “Skip today”. For light sleep detection, though, you still need to open Wakory on your watch briefly in the evening — only there does watchOS let the detection be scheduled for the night.
What does “Skip today” do?
The next scheduled wake-up is dropped once; your plan stays untouched. You skip from within the app. “Wake me anyway” takes it back, and that one can also be triggered from the widget or the complication — a tap there opens the app and asks. Not the other way round: a stray tap on the watch face cannot cancel the coming night.
During the night
Why does Wakory sometimes wake me only at my latest wake time?
During your wake window, Wakory watches for the first light sleep the watch detects. If the watch finds none — because you sleep deeply throughout, because it is not being worn, or because the readings are not clear enough — the guaranteed alarm wakes you at your latest wake time. The window always ends at that time, so you are never woken later than you set. Ten minutes before the window ends, Smart Wake also starts a gentle nudge on your watch — it only wakes you if you are sleeping lightly enough. Detection is an estimate from motion and heart rate and does not find a suitable moment every night.
Why does my iPhone ring even though my watch wakes me?
Because the iPhone holds the guaranteed alarm. With the wake target set to “Both”, the watch wakes you inside your window and the iPhone rings at your latest wake time. With “Apple Watch”, the iPhone stays silent.
It stays quiet if you stop the alarm on your watch, or if you open Wakory on your iPhone beforehand. And if both do go off: “Stop” on your wrist ends the iPhone alarm as well. It costs you one tap, not a night.
Why does the iPhone hold an alarm at all?
Because at night the watch cannot tell the iPhone that it has woken you: watchOS has no channel that wakes a sleeping iPhone. The decision about the guaranteed alarm is therefore made when you turn the alarm on and cannot be revised during the night. We settled it in favour of safety — being woken once too often beats not being woken at all.
What happens if the watch runs out of battery overnight?
With the wake target “Both”, your iPhone wakes you. With “Apple Watch”, only the watch wakes you — and if its battery is empty, nothing rings at all. That is why Wakory reminds you to charge in the evening and warns you when you turn the alarm on with a low battery. A night uses roughly 5 to 15 percent, depending on the model.
Does this work with the watch in airplane mode, or with no iPhone nearby?
Yes — light sleep detection runs entirely on the watch and needs no connection. There is one limitation: if you stop the alarm on your watch while it has no connection to your iPhone, the iPhone never hears about it and may ring anyway. A “Stop” on the iPhone then ends the alarm.
Why does the watch detect nothing while it is locked?
On a locked Apple Watch, health data is protected; heart rate and sleep stages cannot be read. Wakory then detects light sleep from your movements alone. Worn with wrist detection enabled, the watch normally stays unlocked.
Sound, vibration and control
Why does my watch wake me with vibration only, without the sound I picked?
The watch plays the sound you chose in Wakory only while Wakory is open on the watch. If the app is closed, watchOS wakes you with an escalating vibration and its fixed accompanying tone, and shows the system alarm screen “Alarm from ‘Wakory’”. That screen is the intended behaviour, not a fault.
Does Wakory break through the silent switch and Focus?
The guaranteed alarm on the iPhone does — it uses AlarmKit, the same foundation as Apple's own Clock app. The alarm on the watch, by contrast, follows the watch's own settings: Silent Mode and Theater Mode remove the accompanying tone, while the vibration stays at full strength.
How do I stop an alarm that is ringing?
On your wrist, with “Open”: that ends the alarm on both devices. “Stop” ends the watch alarm right away; your iPhone may still ring afterwards, because the watch can only reach it while Wakory is open. On your iPhone, with “Stop”. Snooze runs through the iPhone alarm; with the wake target “Apple Watch”, the alarm rings only once.
How do I turn the alarm off for one night?
Before the night, use “Turn off alarm” in the app, or “Skip today” in the weekly plan — both live there. The widget and the complication never switch the alarm off; they can only turn it on, and even that only after asking. Wakory confirms in the evening that nothing will wake you, so that turning it off by accident does not go unnoticed.
How do I change the evening reminders?
In the app settings under “Reminders” you can adjust the number of reminders and each individual time.
Data and privacy
Which health data does Wakory read, and does it leave my device?
Through HealthKit, Wakory reads — read-only — sleep analysis data (sleep stages) and heart rate. Nothing is written back. There is no server and no cloud sync: all data stays on your iPhone and your Apple Watch.
Wakory will not use, disclose, or share data obtained through HealthKit with third parties for advertising, marketing, or other use-based data mining purposes. Wakory does not sell data obtained through HealthKit to data brokers or other information resellers. HealthKit data is used exclusively to provide the Smart Wake feature.
Details are in our privacy policy.
How do I delete my data?
Use the delete function in the app settings, or uninstall the app. You can revoke HealthKit access at any time in the iOS settings.
Does Wakory work without an Apple Watch?
Yes — as a dependable alarm at your wake time. Light sleep detection is not possible without a paired Apple Watch, because the readings it needs are taken at the wrist.
